When Will the Next Episode Be Out?

written by 19 Comments posted in Latest News

Of all the questions we get here at TimeLesSub, the one we hear the most frequently and the one that annoys us most is “When will the next episode be out?”

To the viewer, it is a simple question, but it vexes us because the answer is and ALWAYS WILL BE…

“We don’t know.”

It’s ready when it’s ready. It’s out when it’s out. We always release each episode as soon as it is ready, but there are so many factors that go into a fansub that the time component is completely unpredictable.  Every week I try to estimate when an episode will be ready based on the rhythm of previous episodes, and every week I am dead wrong.

What you need to understand as viewers is that fansubs are done by people, not machines.  There are a lot of people who work on each episode and anything can go wrong with any of those people at any time, from real-life problems to computer trouble to difficulty with the episode itself.  What should take two days ends up taking a week or two weeks. Is there anything we can do about that?  No.

Nothing is more demoralizing than coming across a viewer whining, “When will the episode be ready? It’s taking so long! You guys are so slow!”  In every single instance, it causes at least one or more staff members to wonder, “Why the hell am I even doing this again? Why am I giving up my personal time and working as hard and as fast as I can, just so some jerk can complain that I’m not “fast enough”?  For some staff members, the answer leads them to quit, and then the project gets even more delayed.

Our staff isn’t here because they’re getting paid. They fansub because they enjoy it or they want to give back to  the community which has provided them with so many hours of entertainment. When it stops being fun, the staff stops working. Some leave with a “sorry” and some leave without a word.

We’ve already lost a large percentage of our active staff, and the majority of our new recruits  quit as soon as they realize how time-consuming and difficult fansubbing can be. When the staff stops working, there aren’t enough committed volunteers out there to take their place. The only result is that there will be no more fansubbing. Already you can see how few fansub groups are left in the community.

So next time your impatience is fraying and you feel the urge to ask “When will the next episode be out?” please keep it to yourself.  This is a golden rule in fansubbing, not just here at TLS. It may feel like an innocuous question but it does more harm than good. If you cannot handle your impatience, I recommend not watching any active projects. Many people, including myself, wait until a project is fully subbed before they start watching it, that way there will be no waiting and the pace of viewing is set by you and no one else.  Try it.

Thanks,

yenchan69

Very well said, it should be a post that is at the top of the blog.
Not that I am a fansubber, but I’m afraid I will sound like a bitch or know-it-all when I see someone asking “When will the next subtitle be out” and I reply to them to learn to wait.

hi there guys~~ now now we all want to watch these dramas right and this people~~
who are capable and are willing enuf to share their talents should not be degraded at all. we are all taking their hard worked for free. And these guys are not even monetarily compensated~~ tsk tsk they are doing this because they love to. So i hope all of us can just wait patiently and commend them for sharing their talents to the fandom nee~~

  7. rizziea says:

    what amazing word! ^O^
that’s true that I and the rest have to wait patiently without ask while you all working hard..
    thank you for sharing!!

  8. koki says:

Of course you have to understand people is waiting, I think there are many solutions also…for example if people give their mails you could send automatically the new releases. I think if you are doing this work has to be because you want it, If people around you are thinking about quiting…wtf are you doing there??? Are you so influenciable by the people who wants watch the next episode??? I don´t think people is so rude with you!!!!!! Really, why are you doing this job????????? I don´t understand people doing voluntary work and then complaning. Well I´m not caming anymore, because thinking about people like you are unconfortable doing this work make me seek also.

  9. darynrose says:

Well… since you already mention it. It’s voluntary work. Volunteering ppl only work when they have the free time hence release schedule will be around the time where ppl actually have the time to work on it. When ppl kept asking when we’ll release the next project and we kept answering when it’s ready, we’re hoping tht ppl actually understand tht. There are millions other ways to keep ppl entertain while waiting for our subs. We do not force anyone to use or wait for our subs. Google is there when you need wht you want. Try it when you have the time.

My subbing interest honestly is hanging by a thread. But the only thing tht is keeping me here is tht the fact I dont like to have things hanging unfinished. I will finish up my projects and rethink about fansubbing afterwards.

I just hope ppl will give a bit of understanding about how fansubbing work and how fansubbers have to deal to get things release.

  10. kiramethyst says:

koki, I think you misunderstand yenchan. Of course we know that people are waiting. That is your choice for choosing an ongoing project. If you chose a completed project, then you wouldn’t have to wait. That is what I do.
We are also not complaining. We are simply tired of being asked the same question over and over again when the answer will always be the same. And it is worse when we have put in so much effort into an episode only to find that it doesn’t satisfy. How would you feel if you had put in your best effort into doing something voluntarily only to end up with complaints that it wasn’t good enough?

  11. koki says:

#complaints that it wasn’t good enough?# All comments I read are about thank you very much for your effort, good job… If you are sayng that should be because maybe there are very few people that are boring you. But because these few people you have to write this angry message? I think it´s ovious not cuestionable that you are doing great job, but again, why are you doing these job, if it´s voluntier have to be because you really like it, when you want, the way you want….. and you have be proud of your project. Who cares about the opinion of other people if you are satisfyed. Some people are boring you??? Whats the problem there, all places are people like that, but you have to be tolerante and don´t even read that types of messages. I think.

  12. Arhazivory says:

@koki. From a scanlator’s point of view, that one or two people who ask about the status of a project creates feelings of annoyance regardless of how many people say ‘thanks’. It’s amazing how pissed off you feel when you put out the effort and someone complains. Now, I’ve always thought the scanlator’s and fansubber’s worls is very similar so I can identify with what’s being said. (Yeah, you people waiting on the next Bloody Monday chapter….we’re working on it -_-’)

We do it because we like it and also because we do it koki, we have the right to complain if we like. TLS is proud of their projects so their pride is not the issue at hand here. Annoying people are. Put yourself in their shoes for a moment and try to understand.

  13. Alvis York says:

    here here.. @koki..
it is mans nature to notice those people who do not appreciate him or her rather than those people who appreciates them.. i mean.. even if there is only person who does not seem to give you credit for what you have done one way or another you’d feel rather bad.. and they have their rights to rant about those who does not seem to show appreciation.. in the first place.. they are just sharing what they’ve got and they have the right to not share it if they want to~~

TLS is a great subbing group..
of course these guys gives their 200% on ensuring high quality subs.. so of course they cannot rush.. and i do believe they to have their own private thing going on top of this subbing hobby of theirs.. i mean.. if you had one hobby you wouldn’t spend like 24/7 on that single hobby right.

  14. Alvis York says:

@ koki.. this is not a job for them. It is a hobby.
    JOBS HAVE PAY. THEY DON’T. ^^, nee~~

  15. koki says:

Yeah, I think like that also, when I was saying that “Why are you doing this payless work?”, I´m waiting… because I like it you know. In any other hooby also it´s the same I think, If you play any sport…any social help…payless, you are working hard everyday a lot of hours you know…but why are you doing that? because it´s amazing for you…you feel very well right. And if someone annoys you, are you gonna say I´m quiting because he don´t apreciate me????? I don´t think so. No one has the right to judge your hard work, you do it the way you want, and the way you feels it nice for you. For example, I´m playng football, doing it everyday, playless of course, sharing with my friends, all my friends saying me it´s great to be with me and sharing amazing moments, and some people who are not my friends came and say me I don´t play well, that I´m a mess… and also I know it´s not even true. Am I gonna say, I´m quiting this hobby because that person annoyed me???? When the rest of the team supports me???? I don´t think so. I only wanted to know if they feel well with the work they do… because in the message it seems they are working unconfortable for other people that are ordering them what they have to do, like a boss. I know for sure that if they are confortable they will continue doing it. I only wanted to say them about don´t bother themselfs with no point comments. Anyway yenchan uploaded Shokojo Seira right… Ok regards to all of you and thanks for your great job.

Well, so far none of the fansubbers that i know quitted bec. of the annoying viewers. They quitted bec. of hectic schedule in real life. Of course we know that ppl are waiting for our releases that’s why we don’t want to leave a project unfinished. But as yenchan said, there are unavoidable circumstances that fansubbers encounter during subbing process like pc crashing, raw videos unavailable, desynched audio & not to mention real life schedules. But we always worked our asses out to fix everything just to share our subbed videos. Like in my case, my uber old pc is always down and my uber old laptop is not so friendly w/ me at times, but i have a pending proj. to finish. What do i do? I go to my mom’s house w/c is 30-45 mins. drive fr my house just to use her laptop and install all the programs i need including the fonts and re-download the video if i don’t have a copy in my external HD. And why am i doing this? Bec. i know ppl are waiting for the subs & i don’t want the file or the proj. to be delayed bec. of me. Of course i know i shldn’t be saying this but i want you to know the things we do to give you releases though it’s delayed. That’s why we don’t want to give you specific dates on the releases. What if we give you a date of the release & you waited for it, then something happened & we were not able to make it on the said date? I’m sure you will be more angry to us. Or what if we put in this page “TIMELESSUB WON’T BE SHARING SUBBED VIDEOS ANYMORE. SUBBED VIDEOS WILL BE EXCLUSIVE TO IT’S STAFF ONLY.’ How about that ‘ne?

  18. yenchan69 says:

@koki, why are u arguing with my staff? Do you WANT to piss them off even more than they already are? I post an answer to a frequently asked question in the hopes that it will never be asked again, I explain why that’s the answer and I detail its effect on my staff…what’s there still to argue about?? You’re trying to tell us we shouldn’t be pissed off, and I am telling you that it DOES piss us off. End of story. Just shut your damn mouth already! You wanna play the smartass, but you’re making my staff cranky…and after I go through all the trouble of telling everyone to lay off so we can try to get some work done. Enough! I don’t know what you think you’re gonna get out of goading my staff to quit, but if one more person leaves our staff, I’m quitting, too, and to hell with all of you.
