Dark Light
Samurai High School Ep 04

Miura Haruma
Shirota Yuu

Synopsis:
Mochizuki Kotaro is a mild-mannered, unmanly high school student. One day, he visits a library and meets the mysterious librarian Himiko, who recommends to him an ancient book about a heroic general from the Sengoku period 400 years ago. Kotaro notices that he has the same name and age as the general described in the book, and he experiences a flashback… Kotaro later mentions the book to his father, who tells him that he may be the descendent of a powerful samurai. At that moment, Kotaro receives a message from his childhood friend Ai telling him that their classmate Nakamura Tsuyoshi is in trouble. He rushes to the scene but doesn’t have the guts to help, until another flashback transforms him into a samurai! –Tokyograph

    TimeLes, you guys are GREAT!!

Thank you so much for all your hard work!

I am really curious, so I put my post here as well as over at D-addicts
I have a culture related question, that I hope you can help me with..

Ai always calls Kotaro Kotaro without anything added (i.e. kun). In contrast Kotaro calls Ai by her last name. Isn’t the discrepancy very big? I mean, if I am calling my friend by his/her name (presumably indicating we are close?) and he/she uses my last name (you are just a random person?) isn’t that hurtful? Or am I totally not understanding Japanese honorifics? I hope you can make me understand the implications of this a bit better…

    Anyway, love you all!!!

@Bibliofil – Asked my friend (who’s Japanese BTW) about this. Obviously it’s a character/personality thing. Best friends/BFFs don’t have to call each other by first names directly, it all depends on the person.

As far as Kotaro & Ai, if you remember ep 1 when Ai was recalling a childhood memory she had (when Kotaro saved her from those kids), he called her “Ai-chan.” When they grew up, somehow Kotaro became a bit “more formal” to her and switched from his childhood “Ai-chan” to a more formal “Nagasawa.” And at that time when Ai tried to remind Kotaro of that moment, he says he doesn’t remember and couldn’t help not remembering. It could be a male pride thing, but it could also mean that he has no intention or have no interest in becoming “more than just friends” with her.

Japanese girls in general get giddy when the boys they like call them by their first name and at the same time allowed to call them by their first name. In this case, obviously something may have happened with their closeness. I’m leaning more to Kotaro just being humble to Ai (as well as his classmates) by calling them by their last names. Maybe he got shy all of a sudden? But I’m told that in the cases of BFFs/childhood best friends, it’s more of a personality thing.

    Hope that helps. ^^

    @Adrimarie Thank you!

    So it does!

I also remembered the Ai-chan from ep1, but I though of that switch more in terms of getting older. (Like in german, when you are little you have -chen attached to your name. When you get older the diminuitive form gets dropped. I totallt tease some of my german friends with the -chen form of their name.)

It is obvious that Kotaro cares for Ai but he isn’t exaclty bold so I can totally accept the peronality thing.

I guess we’ll se in future episodes if he likes Ai “only” as a friend or more!

    Have a great weekend!

@Bibliofil – Agreed w/ what you said. Kotaro does care for Ai, I mean it’s natural for childhood BFFs/best friends, but he doesn’t seem to think about their relationship further than just being BFFs if you know what I mean. If you notice that in ep 3 and in ep 4, he tries to avoid the subject whenever Nakamura would ask him if he’s “in love” with Ai, sometimes he would go on an offensive by saying “You’re in love with Nagasawa, aren’t you?” or “What about you? I know you like her…”, somewhere in those lines.

I just think Kotaro has a lot other things in mind which he considers a lot more important than his relationship with Ai. For instance, his problem with his ancestor possessing his body and leaving his body at random now. LOL XD

I’m beginning to pay more attention to their “BFF” relationship as well since Kotaro reacted in early ep 4 that Ai is somewhat becoming attracted to his ancestor and complaining that his ancestor gets all the credit and basically “stealing the show.”

All I can say right now is that everyone involved in Kotaro’s life are (or will be) getting “schooled” by the samurai. (haha… pun?)
